TV Show Review: Revenge

If you ever thought revenge was a dish best served cold then you have not yet watched this new ABC TV show called Revenge for the 2011-2012 television season. Revenge tells the story of a young woman named Emily Thorne; aka Amanda Clarke, who makes the decision to systematically get even with the people who destroyed her father. Revenge stars Emily VanCamp of the TV shows: Brothers and Sisters and Everwood, James Tupper, and Madeleine Stowe. Emily VanCamp starred as sweet and innocent characters on those two shows but in this one, she is not like that all. Time will tell how this show does in the ratings but I will go out on a limb to say that this show is already a hit and it has only been on once.

Revenge starts off at an engagement party put on by the Grayson family for Emily Thorne and Daniel Grayson. What starts out as a simple and elegant party soon turns to horror when it is discovered that the son has been murdered. We go back five or six months to when Emily moves in to one of the houses that is for rent. It turns out this house that she rents belongs to one of the people who helped destroy her father. She makes herself out as one of the rich society people who is in the Hamptons for the summer. She makes her move on the lady she is renting from first, whose name is Lydia Davis. Lydia is in a mess with her husband planning on divorcing her then it comes to light that she is having an affair with her best friend’s husband. Her best friend happens to be Victoria Grayson and with a little bit of help, it is all revealed. Emily is able to get a bit of revenge by having Lydia banished from the family and out of the way.

We learn that Emily was taken from her father when he was accused of something so horrific that he did not do and sent to prison. At one point, we see Emily getting out of a prison of some sort and meeting Nolan Ross; who is one of the rich; who helps her find out what really happened. He is the one who gives her the things of her father and she is able to read his letters. He wants her to forgive what happened but she is unable to do this. She wants her revenge and she will get it every which way she can. She is like a snake; slinking her way into everyone’s lives as she does what she came to the Hamptons to do. She insinuates herself into everything, methodically doing certain things so she can do what she has to.

Madeleine Stowe plays Victoria Grayson, who is someone that is strong and a viper, but I can see as I was watching, is no match for Emily Thorne. She may not be sure who she is and she will try to figure it out, but she will go down eventually as Emily sets her trap. Emily was the one who made sure Victoria found out that her husband was having an affair with her best friend. She even sets up an accidental introduction to the son, Daniel, who is intrigued by her. We also get to meet someone else from Emily’s past who was someone special, but she has no time in her little revenge plot to get back into that life.

I find this show intriguing and fascinating. I have watched Emily VanCamp on two shows and liked her. I like her in this show and it is fascinating to watch her being so completely different than the characters that she has played in the past. I know it is the first episode but as I said it is an intriguing show and I plan to keep on watching as long as it is on the air. I want to know more and see more of what is going on; to watch her as she plots and gets her revenge. Revenge airs on the ABC channel on Wednesday nights at 10 pm eastern standard time.
