The Only Voice I Hear is in My Head (A Villanelle)

I cannot hear sweet things my lover says.

I listen, strain my ears, but once again,

the only voice I hear is in my head.

Alas, though sound and noise for me are dead,

Within my soul I still can hear the rain.

But, I cannot hear sweet things my lover says.

Oh come to me my love, my heart has bled,

For nothing that you whisper can remain.

The only voice I hear is in my head.

Although the sound of music has been dead,

And melodies are locked within my brain.

I cannot hear sweet things my lover says.

Could it be that I have been misled?

This paradox I simply can’t explain.

The only voice I hear is in my head.

The feelings for my love, alas, are dead.

A secret that has brought me so much pain.

I cannot hear sweet things my lover says.

The only voice I hear is in my head.
