Science Self Explore – Harvest Exploration

One pre-science skill that is very easy to work into any preschool science program is observation. Observation skills develop descriptive skills and using five senses. Observation does not always need to be guided. Here is a great activity to put in the science area. The children will look and learn all their own.

Supplies: (at least 2 of each)

* Gourds
* Pumpkins
* Apples
* Corn
* Squash
* Other Harvest Vegetables
* Unprocessed Wheat (optional)
* (Use local items)

Preparations:

* Cut one of the harvest vegetables in half.
* Place in a shallow bin and put in the science area.

Procedure:

* Show the children the items and tell them what they are.
* Let them explore.
* Ask questions to encourage further exploration. Example: What is inside the pumpkin?
