Review: Our Family Brand Mountain Drops Soda

Even though I haven’t kicked my Mountain Dew addiction completely, I have cut back considerably and, instead of consuming several 12-packs a week, I am only drinking a couple 2-liter bottles worth. In fact, buying it that way has saved me quite a bit of money.

A couple days ago, I had to buy some more and stopped at the store to pick up another 2-liter. It was a Monday and I’m guessing they had some sort of sale over the weekend because they were all out. I didn’t want to spend money on a Mountain Dew 12-pack (roughly $5 at this store) so I ended up looking for some sort of substitute instead. This turned out to be Mountain Drops Soda from the Our Family brand.

I have had other soda from the Our Family label before and, for the most part, think it’s an OK cheaper brand. But, I also haven’t found any varieties I would buy on a regular basis; just when I need cheap soda for a party. This was the first time I have tried this particular variety and, unfortunately, it didn’t do anything to change my opinion.

This particular Mountain Dew rip-off was definitely cheaper; by about 20 cents. And, had it offered something similar in terms of overall quality, I probably would have considered it as a replacement. However, it didn’t manage to do that.

I’ve been drinking this for the past couple of days now and can’t quite put my finger on it exactly. But, even though this looks like Mountain Dew and should taste like it, there is definitely a difference. Part of the problem is the soda seems to be a bit flat tasting but there’s something else that gives it just enough of a different, less enjoyable flavor that makes me not like it as much as the more expensive brand or even some other cheaper brands.

Another thing I found about this product is it gives me heartburn. I don’t have that problem with Mountain Dew but have found that with some other cheaper brands in the past; brands that I simply could not drink as a result of it.

As I said before, this soda is definitely cheaper than Mountain Dew. But, the savings isn’t enough to justify sacrificing the quality I’ve come to expect from the more expensive brand. The next time the store is out of Mountain Dew, I probably will go to a different store before buying this again.
