Recording Sound Directly on Your Computer

When dealing with a Windows 7 machine it becomes a bit more of a hassle. Sadly, Microsoft has stripped our luxury of Stereo Mix codec’s, causing us, the user, to have to install them manually. For this step I referred to CNET Downloads as they have proven to be a trustworthy source, but this is the internet which is changing every second with each data packet that is transferred between protocols, so download at your own risk.

The necessary download links are provided below with operating system labels:

Windows 2000/XP/2003
Windows Vista/Windows 7 32-bit
Windows Vista/Windows 7 64-bit
Windows 2000/XP/2003 Profession x64 Edition

If you are unfamiliar with your operating system, simply go to the Start Menu, locate My Computer orComputer, right-click this and access properties. Here you should find a basic list of specifications on your computer. Your operating system information will be presented here as well.

Once the necessary codec’s have been downloaded, follow any necessary installation procedures. Once this has been completed you should now find yourself with a Realtek HD Audio Manager. Access this and you should have a tab dedicated to “Stereo Mix”. If not, enter your System Sounds audio manager and navigate to the Recording tab. Right-click within this tab and check “Show Disconnected Devices”. Once this has been checked, revert back to the Realtek Audio Manager. Your “Stereo Mix” option is now available. With this new feature you can do several things. All audio communication applications (such as Skype, Oovoo, Chatroulette, Omeggle, or any other application which allows you to record/transfer music into the program can now be altered to play the sounds on your computer. To do this, locate the sound settings within your program and change the settings from using your microphone to using “Stereo Mix”.
