Recap: ‘Homeland,’ Season 1, Episode 10, ‘Representative Brody’

“Homeland,” Season 1, Episode 10, “Representative Brody” concerns the next step in making Brody a Manchurian candidate for Al Qaida. Also Carrie and Saul close in on Brody’s Saudi handler.

Spoilers surely follow.

Brody proves himself to not only be a traitor but also manipulative. When he is not trampling on Carrie’s feelings for him, he is overriding Jess’s objections to his running for office by using her former lover, Mike, whom he put on the deck at the party. He pretends to be very understanding about how he comforted Jess and helped out with the kids. Brody is shaping up to be a very good operative with the ability to lie like that. He will make a great politician too for the same reason.

Meanwhile, Carrie, Saul, and the CIA go over what they know about the Saudi handler. He has been an indiscreet gentleman indeed. Despite the fact he has three wives and many grandchildren, he likes to go to a gay bathhouse and have sex with anonymous men. He is also in debt up to his eyeballs, so he is taking money from Abu Nazir.

So, with the help of a patriotic bank manager, the trap is set. The haughty Saudi is offered a choice: Become a CIA asset or have the fact that he is a homosexual (something not entirely approved of in the Kingdom) be revealed for all to know. At first, the Saudi is defiant. But then Carrie finds another lever to move him. It seems that one of his daughters is shining at a prestigious university and has a bright future ahead of her. The CIA can make sure that she will be forced to move back to Saudi Arabia, wear a burka, and get fat. The Saudi breaks and agrees to set up a meeting with Walker.

The meeting is to take place at Faragut Square, a public place. The place is seeded with CIA operatives ready to grab Walker (or in extremis shoot him) as he appears. Walker seems to appear, carrying a brief case, and headed for the Saudi. Carrie is the first to figure out that something is wrong. The briefcase explodes, killing the man carrying it and the Saudi and injuring many, including Carrie.

The man with the briefcase was a homeless guy Walker had hired to carry meet the Saudi. Walker exploded the briefcase by remote control, taking out a compromised Saudi diplomat. This leads Carrie and Saul to conclude that Abu Nazir has a mole in the government.
