Recap: ‘Burn Notice,’ Season 5, Episode 9, ‘Eye for an Eye’

In “Burn Notice,” Season 5, Episode 9, “Eye for an Eye,” while Michael and Sam go after a Romanian war criminal who tried to blow him up, Fi and Jesse go on a job to protect a drug company magnate named James. Things do not go as planned, of course. Spoilers follow.

The bomb-maker is named Lucian, an elderly gentleman who runs a clock shop as a sideline to being a war criminal and someone who makes people explode. What war he was a criminal in was unclear. World War II, which had a surfeit of war criminals, was 70 years ago, and Lucian looks very spry for someone in his ’90s.

Having survived an electrified grate trap, Michael and Sam take Lucian to a shack and begin to sweat him. Lucian proves to be an adroit interrogatee indeed, spinning all sorts of marvelous tales that have no bearing with reality. Obviously a bit of leverage is needed.

Meanwhile, Jesse and Fi find out James is as dirty as they come. It seems his partner Dan had come up with the wonder drug that has made him rich. So James framed Dan, arranged for him to go into a South American prison, then stole his drug, wife, and company. He also likes to cut corners in his drug testing, which means lawsuits and a lot of outraged people.

The plan now is to find evidence that will burn James. To this task, Michael has to pull double duty. He pretends to be a crazed man whose mother was killed in one of James’ experiments. Michael blowing up half a parking garage to show James he means business motivates the tycoon to allow Jesse and Fi full access to his company.

There is a neat scene that has Michael being smuggled in to crack James’ safe. That goes south, however, and they have to resort to a car hijacking and a confession for the outraged wife to hear. James goes to jail, Dan and the wife begin some kind of reconciliation, and all is well.

Meanwhile, Lucian has a daughter who is in the country illegally. This proves to be the leverage needed for him to open up. However, Sam and Michael’s inquires attract Lucian’s employers, who then shoot up the shack and Lucian in it, though not before he whispers to Michael the next name on the chain of people to have a serious conversation with about Max’s murder.

One complaint. Fi can be such a girl sometimes, going all passive-aggressive while Michael has to break dinner dates with her. For an ex-terrorist, she can be not very understanding about how the job comes first. Mind, one likes white table cloths and candlelight as much as the next guy, but one would think Fi would find taking care of a bad guy even more romantic. Just saying.
