My Hair Disaster

Like many African American women my hair is my everything. I love to experiment with different kinds of hair colors and weaves. In doing so my hair has had its ups and downs. The worst hair mistake I have ever made was during my senior year of high school. I decided to give my self a home relaxer. Now, do not be mistaken I have given myself relaxers before, but I got too confident in myself and in my relaxer giving skills that I did not realize the biggest mistake I was on the verge of making.

Mistake # 1:
I choose a relaxer kit that I have never used before. I wanted to try something new and I did not give my hair time to strengthen.

Mistake #2:
I did not look at the book and see what kind of strength it was. This was a classic mistake of rushing in the beauty supply store and not paying attention.

Mistake #3:
I left the relaxer on for too long.

With these three mistakes I ended up giving myself a death relaxer. At first I thought my hair came out really nice. It was straight and silky and the curls stayed in when I curled it. As the days progressed however my hair was getting shorter and shorter. At first I did not notice the drastic change in my hair length. Than one day as I was vigorously flat ironing my hair I noticed that it was falling out rapidly. I ran into the bathroom and noticed how badly it had broken off. I wanted to cry as I ran my fingers through all of the breakage. The worst part of it all was that it was almost my prom. How could I possibly go to prom with no hair. I weighed out all of my options and decided to get a sew in. For the whole summer of my senior year I wore a sew in. Letting my hair marinate and grow. My hair grew back and I no longer put in relaxers to strong. I also stopped flat ironing my hair everyday. That helped with the killing of my hair. The state of my hair now is so much better. I wear a sew-in and I am letting it grow, because I will never forget the year that I burned out all of my hair.
