Lighting Ideas and Design Lighting for Your Living Room

The living room is the centre of family life. Here you relax after work, watch TV or read books, have dinner with your family and friends and your kids like to play here, too. We do a lot of different things in our living rooms and for each activity we want to create a spacial lighting ambience. In this article you will find some tips and ideas how easily you can adjust the lighting depending on your activities and mood. For realizing any of the following lighting ideas you won’t even have to lay any new electric power lines.

The ceiling light is mostly fixed in the centre of the ceiling and is responsible for the general lighting in the living room. It is good for every day tasks and when the kids play around, but it’s hard to create an individual mood lighting with it. Therefore, we will have a closer look at the different areas which we have within our living room.

Of course, everyone has its own living style, furnitures and personal things in its private spaces, but some things are quite equal. Normally, we all have a sitting area with sofas which is mostly oriented towards the TV. Some of us also have a dining table in the living room. For each of these areas we want to suggest a few lighting ideas and recommend various designer lighting for different interior design styles.

For the sitting area table lights are the best idea. Decorative table lamps are eye-catchers by day and night and they have the right height to illuminate different spots in your room. You can arrange them on tables left and right beside the sofa. The Prandina Glam table light for example has a bright light and a very stylish and modern look. The lamp is fixed upon a cylindrical body made of transparent glass. The decorative table light Maseiro Aurea has a more playful and glamorous look because of many crystal pendants which are available in purple, amber, saphire, red, peridot and transparent.

Another lighting solution is a large floor lamp, especially for small living rooms. They can be used as reading lamps and they are much more flexible like the Blauet Berilio light shows. The warm light shines through the lamp shade and contributes to the uniform lighting. The Maseiro Missià STL3 floor light – created by designer Manual Vivian – has a colourful murano glass shade and will bring more joy into your living room.

When we watch TV in the evening, our eyes have to adapt strong light and dark contrasts. To make the environmental lighting more comfortable for our eyes, it is recommendable to put a floor lamp near or – if possible – behind the TV. Standing lights with less height are perfect for this position and won’t affect your viewing pleasure. The lighting designer Bernd Unrecht created the Marilyn F floor lamp which is – like the name says – a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. The shape of it’s white lampshade was inspired by a famous picture of the film diva and stands on three slender steel legs. The floor light De Majo Perlage consists of three lighting balls made of white crystal glass standing above the other. This floor light is a jewel of Italian lighting design.

A second floor light which emanates the light up to the ceiling lends your living room a warm and cozy atmosphere. It can be put in one corner of the living room where the walls and the ceiling reflect the light. The standing lights Terzani Bara Bara and Artemide Tebe terra appear in different types of lighting design. A simple but beautiful style is the right description for the modern Artemide Tebe terra floor light while the Italian Terzani lighting series Bara Bara with its rubiginose coloured light structure and white sainted glass fits more to the landhouse style.
