Preparing perfume at home is inexpensive compared to commercial brands, and only takes a few moments from start to finish. Homemade perfumes can be customized to fit your favorite colors or flavors, or those of someone else when given as a gift. Many women enjoy the scent of citrus fruits. Fresh citrus fruits can be used to create a fruity-smelling perfume or body spray that mimics your favorite fruit variety. Learn how to create your own citrus-scented perfume with the following instructions.
Step 1
Fill a mason jar or glass container with the approximate amount of perfume you would like to make. Ensure that the container you use has a tight-fitting lid. Set the jar of water off to one side.
Step 2
Remove the peel from the citrus fruits of your choice. Choose one citrus fruit or a combination for your perfume. Some great fruits to try include oranges, limes, lemons, and grapefruits. Perform smell tests before using the fruit in your perfume.
Step 3
Drop the citrus fruit peels into the jar of water. Replace the top on the jar and tighten it to eliminate air-flow into the container. Store the container of water and fruit peels in a dry, cool area, in a place that it will not get knocked over.
Step 4
Shake the jar of water and fruit peels once each day. Repeat this for several days. Do not open the jar during this time. Test the fragrance after 2 days. Continue to let the mixture sit longer if it has not yet taken on a fragrance you enjoy.
Step 5
Strain the mixture through a coffee filter or cheese cloth once it has reached its desired fragrance. Pour the liquid into a spray bottle or old perfume bottle. Spray the perfume on when desired, and replace it with new each month.
Tips and Warnings
Remember that the more water you use, the more citrus fruit peels you will have to use to create a strong fragrance. Add a few drops of pure alcohol to help preserve the perfume longer. Without a preservative, the perfume can be used for up to one month if kept in a dark, cool area. Test the citrus fruit on a small area of the skin before creating your perfume. Some people may be allergic to the acids found in citrus fruit.
