How to Clean Electric Shavers

The odds are pretty good that you have at least one electric shaver (or razor, as they are also called) in your bathroom at home. If you do, you’ll understand exactly how important it is to keep your electric shaver clean. Cleaning your electric shaver on a regular basis is an important and often overlooked bit of personal appliance maintenance. These types of shavers do not work efficiently and can actually hurt you if they are not cleaned periodically. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1

Gather a few cleaning materials. You’ll need a soft bristle brush (like an old toothbrush), razor lubricant and some isopropyl alcohol. If you have electrical contact cleaner, then use it to clean the sensitive electrical parts.

Step 2

Unplug the shaver. Before you start cleaning your razor, make sure you have disconnected the electrical cord from the wall outlet. Remember that electricity and water do not mix, so remove any battery and unplug the power cord from the wall.

Step 3

Inspect the shaver. Take a look at its overall condition. Check for cracks and see if the main screen is in good condition and that all parts are in working order.

Step 4

Disassemble the shaver. Remove the screen on the shaving head and remove any debris that may be inside it. Be careful not to dislodge anything that may be necessary for proper operation. There are very small pieces and fine mechanical equipment inside the screen, so just lightly tap the head to get the dirt and hair out.

Step 5

Clean the shaver. Place the screen in a small bowl of isopropyl alcohol or warm soapy water – either will work. You can get electric razor cleaner in the same place you bought your shaver, but isopropyl alcohol and liquid soap are much cheaper. While the screen is soaking in the cleaning solution, use the small brush that came with your shaver or an old toothbrush with soft bristles and lightly brush away the debris.

Step 6

When you finish cleaning, take a moment to look over the electrical connections for possible corrosion. If there is no corrosion, then spray a little cleaner and scrub the electrical contacts. Remove the screen from the cleaning solution and let dry. After the screen dries, wipe off any remaining dirt and inspect again for damage to the screen.

Step 7

Assemble the shaver. When everything is clean, put your razor back together. Put back everything you took out in reverse order.

Step 8

Lubricate the shaver. After assembly, spray some lubricant on the edge of the screen. This helps to reduce friction between the blades and the screen, which in turn will give a closer shave and reduce the need for shaving. Before shaving in the future, take some time to lubricate your shaver.

Step 9

Test the shaver. Last but not least, there is one thing left to do which is test the razor. Just turn it on and check that everything works properly. If so, go ahead and shave.
