Four Reasons to Watch ‘Sons of Anarchy’

I’ll admit it. “Sons of Anarchy” is my guilty pleasure. Not since “Friends” has there been a show I schedule my life around to watch each week.

The show automatically draws in motorcycle enthusiasts. Being a rider is one of the reasons I watch regularly. Here are four more that keep me and others tuning in to Charming.

1. “Bad boy” eye candy

Who doesn’t like tattoos? Ok, so maybe they wouldn’t appeal to my mom, but the inked up, brooding bad boy with a big heart gets me every time. In that area “S.O.A” definitely delivers. Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam, and Opie Winston, played by Ryan Hurst, both have the bad boy image down pat.

2. Redefining family

“Sons of Anarchy” is one of the few shows where the main characters suffer the fallout from broken homes. Season 4 highlights the struggle between Gemma, her son Jax, and husband/stepfather (and club president) Clay Morrow. For Gemma and Jax alike, honoring the memory of Jax’s fallen father clashes with Clay’s vision for the club’s future.

Jax also deals with mama drama in his relationship with girlfriend Tara. Though they have one son together, Jax’s older son Abel has a different mother. In the season 4 finale, Abel’s formerly drug-addicted mom attempts to re-enter his life. It will be interesting to see if she is successful.

3. Strong, smart women

Another word that comes to mind is manipulative. Jax has his hands full navigating between the demands of his gale-force mother and equally immoveable girlfriend. The two women butt heads often in support of their main man, each with her own agenda.

Gemma and Tara’s tug-of-war came to a head at the end of season 4, as Clay steps down and Jax seizes control of the club. I can’t wait to see who eventually holds Jax’s ear to secretly sway club decisions.

4. Blending the line between good and evil

Power, corruption, crime. The three words go hand-in-hand when describing an outlaw gang like the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club. Where you may not expect to see it is in Charming’s sheriff’s office and business community. The club takes on urban developers who are trying to change Charming’s small-town image and build it into a bigger city. By the end of season 4, you find yourself wondering exactly who the real criminals are.
