Eco-Friendly Gift Ideas

Eco-friendly gifts should be the rage this year with the emphasis being on put on recycling and making our lifestyles more green. Christmas is a time where Americans use more paper than almost any other time of the year. Think of the ribbon, cards, and paper that we thrown away during the end of December and the first part of the new year. Plus, we fill the landfills with plastic packages and many other non evironmental friendly packages each year. Christmas is a great time to consider a more eco-friendly way to celebrate the holiday season. Begin by purchasing gifts that are eco-friendly and consider giving them in reusuable gift bags or even the eco-friendly grocery bags that are available in so many stores these days. As I searched the internet for gifts, these are some of the best that I could find.

One of the neatest ideas that I found was through a company called “Back to the Roots”. This company offers mushroom kits that can be given as gifts to where the receipient can grow their own oyster mushrooms at home. The kit will produce 1 1/2 pounds of mushrooms. Each kit is in a box that the plant actually grows in and will produce the mushrooms within 10 days so it is a gift that will give yet another gift within a few days of the gift being used. The soil that is used is 100% recycled coffee grounds so it is the perfectly eco-friendly soil.

The Back To the Roots company began in 2009 after two young men listened to a lecture at Berkley University and decided that the idea of growing a product that was in recylced coffee grounds was a possible career move. After growing a test bucket of these mushrooms, some interest from a Whole Foods company and a grant from the school, their new business was launched. Their goals for 2011 include the hopes of recycling over 1 million pounds of coffee grounds. Why not offer the special someone in your life the chance to produce a little of their own food and provide them with an eco-friendly gift for the holiday.

Another wonderful product that I found was a gift of Christmas spirits. Yes, a bottle of wine made from locally grown corn and sorgham can be a nice gift for any hostess who is looking to make her party a little more green for the season. Heartland Distillers, located in the heart of Indiana, offers many spirits for the holiday season that all are produced from locally grown items. Spirits made here are included vodka, gin, bourbon, and rum. They offer gift sets as well as individual bottles and they are available at many retailers throughout the state as well as online.

This company prides itself on being the first distillery in Indiana since the Prohibition. When the company began in 2008, the main goals for the company was to make a fine product that was from local items and would eliminate the transport of so many production items. They knew that the green movement would surely be a priority in upcoming years.

Finally, for the kids in the house, consider Global Green Pals. These eco-friendly toy dolls even have names that remind the kids that they are eco-friendly. Names like Carbon Offset Chet and Clean Air Kate are just a couple of the crew of organic cotton and post consumer recycled plastic PET bottle kids that this company makes. Kids will love playing with these dolls and parents will be glad to know that the dolls are eco-friendly. The best part of these dolls is that a portion of each sale goes to support earth friendly efforts through One Percent for the Planet, a global effort for companies to donate at least one percent of their sales to aid environmental organizations across the world.

There are many companies out there in cyberworld that offer recycled products and eco-friendly products that would make great gifts for the special loved one in your life so consier doing a little research for the ese gifts and make the earth a little more green while sharing your holiday with the ones you love.
