A ceiling canopy is a beautiful thing and a simple matter to make. It’s not connected to the bed yet is seemingly a part of it. You don’t have to spend a huge amount of money to have one; just look for cheap materials you can use now. Whether you use cardboard, foam board, or even Styrofoam, you can quickly and easily make an elegant bed canopy to turn an ordinary bed into something spectacular.
Decide on the material you want to use. It can be thin or thick Styrofoam, foam board, thin cardboard, or even thick, corrugated cardboard. Of course, the thicker the material you begin with, the quicker the canopy will be of a suitable thickness for the canopy. If using thin cardboard, glue many layers together. Glue fewer layers of corrugated cardboard together. No matter what type of material you’re using, glue enough together to be at least a couple of inches thick but, more ideally, even thicker.
It can take several of the thick pieces – no matter what material you’re using – in order to create an area the size of your bed – or slightly larger. Connect the pieces together by using duct tape or packing tape on the back. On the front, cut a piece of lightweight fabric, and glue it to the canopy.
On the sides of the stacked material, paint to be a color found in the fabric choice. If you’re painting Styrofoam be sure to use tempera paints, which won’t melt it.
Use glue dots or strong, double-sided tape – and lots of it – to stick the canopy to the ceiling, directly over the bed. Create a valance around the material to hide the sides and give the canopy a more finished look. You have options for making and hanging the valance. You can gather the fabric by sewing it, or purchase gathered material. The valance can be glued to some material, like cardboard; pins used to attach it to other material, like Styrofoam. The ceiling canopy can’t hold heavy drapes around it but, depending on how you secure it to the ceiling, can hold a valance or even full-length, wispy curtains.
The ceiling canopy is one of the easiest types you can make, yet it’s stunning and elegant. No one will suspect you spent so little to make it and, in fact, no one will suspect you made it at all!
