Creative Ways to Decorate a Dining Room with Plants

Plants add color, texture, design and life to any space in the home, and the dining room is the ideal location to decorate with houseplants. Some people literally fill their windows with plants of all types, but it should not look like a jungle with a table in the center. When houseplants are selectively and appropriately displayed, they can look spectacular in just about any dining room.

I have completed design jobs for clients that wanted to add plants to their dining room decorating scheme, and I explained the difference between a well decorated space and an overload of greenery. Do not place more than four or five potted plants in your dining room, and be sure to display them in a creative way. With tabletop greenhouses, plant shelves and wall pockets, a dining room can look absolutely amazing.

Decorate the Dining Room with Tabletop Greenhouses

Greenhouses come in all sizes, but when people think of a greenhouse they usually envision a large structure. They are also available in tabletop varieties. Small iron and glass greenhouses are ideal when looking for ways to decorate a dining room with plants. They are the perfect size for covering and displaying plants that thrive in humid locations.

Hang Wall Pockets to Create a Natural Focal Point

Wall pockets are typically made of sculptured metal, and they provide a stylish and unique way to decorate a dining room with plants. I have filled wall pockets with various types of miniature ivy, and they thrived and grew into long, lush dining room plants. They were able to withstand low levels of light, and they were quite resilient.

Since wall pockets are not watertight, begin by filling small freezer bags with rich organic soil. Tuck the small bags of soil into the metal pockets, and plant a few ivy sprigs in each one. Just be careful when watering the plants. They are easy to over water since they are unable to drain.

Decorate Above Windows with Plant Shelves

If your dining room has a high ceiling, consider using shelves and plants to decorate the space above windows. The area above windows a particularly good place to grow trailing plants if the dining room offers plenty of natural light. As the vines grow they will beautifully decorate the windows. The vines can be draped over decorative plant hooks or curtain rods, and they can be trimmed as necessary.
