I went to the store to buy my usual brand of cat litter. Sitting on the shelf next to my usual brand was Arm and Hammer Double Duty Cat Litter. I noticed that both brands of litter were the exact same price, so I bought the Arm and Hammer, just to give it a try.
The writing on the box says it is “Advanced Odor Control Clumping Litter”. The box also states “Powerful moisture activated baking soda crystals boosted with feces odor neutralizers destroy urine and feces odors on contact”. The box also mentions that it doesn’t matter how many cats you have, your home will be odor free. I have three cats and two litter boxes.
When I got home, I cleaned and washed out the litter boxes and poured the Arm and Hammer cat litter into the boxes. I immediately noticed the strong flowery odor of the litter. I have to admit that the flowery smell was a bit overwhelming and I wondered if I had made a mistake buying this brand.
As I cleaned the litter boxes each day, I noticed that I did not smell the usual ammonia odor from the cat urine. Even after several days, when the ammonia smell can get strong, I did not smell it. I was impressed. I can smell the flowery odor of the Arm and Hammer litter when I walk near one of the litter boxes and do not smell urine or feces.
It was also easier to scoop out the urine soaked clumps because of the crystals in the litter. When using my previous litter, sometimes the clumps would stick to the bottom of the box and I would have to scrape the clump off of the bottom. With the Arm and Hammer litter, I did not have to do this because the clumps lifted right out and did not stick to the bottom of the litter box.
My verdict on the Arm and Hammer Double Duty cat litter is this: I will buy this litter again. I think it does an incredible job of masking the urine smell and it makes cleaning the litter boxes easier. Even though the flowery smell of the litter is a bit overpowering, the good definitely outweighs the bad.
I paid $5.50 for a 12 pound box at Dollar General.
