A Country Christmas Story

Twas the night before Christmas, in the Cartwright Home

All Five Kids were stirring, they were ready to Roam.

The Stockings were hung by a nail on the wall,

In hopes Santa Claus wouldn’t have a great fall!

Last years toys were scattered on the floor,

And Sherry forgot and locked the front door.

Mom and Dad got the kids all to bed,

And they fell asleep without a thump on the head.

Mom in her fleece and Dad in his huntin’ cap

Had finally settled down for their short little nap.

When Out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

Dad sprang from bed and popped a Ten point in the bladder.

Mom ran to the window like a bat out of heck,

Tripping over the bed nearly breaking her neck.

The Kids ran screaming to look for their toys

But found no Santa Claus but Dad full of joys!

The Family was confused as they stood at the door,

This is Christmas Eve and Dad had to settle a score;

He missed a deer bow season while Ed nabbed a Buck,

He wasn’t going to miss his best luck!

Dad went to the Tree to skin his big deer,

While the family returned to bed with a fear.

Will Santa Claus come after all this,

Or will he skip our house because of the amiss?

Morning came quickly and we jumped from our bed,

Ran to the Christmas Tree with a downcast dread.

We just knew Santa got scared when he heard the shot,

And didn’t leave toys, deer meat for sure is all we got.

When we reached the Christmas Tree it was all alright,

Santa had came some time during the night.

Paul got a race car and Todd got blocks,

But what had us stumped, they were still in the box.

Santa Claus had never done this before,

Yep, we agreed he was scared, dropped them off and ran for the door!

The morning was fun as we went through our stuff,

Mama hacked deer so it wouldn’t be tough.

I had my doll and Tam had her Bear

When we gathered for Breakfast and Dad said the Prayer.

We were thankful for the biscuits and eggs and deer meat,

It was a Chaos Christmas but it was quite neat!
