Q: My mother has a cancer in the deep lining of the vaginal wall that is blocking her rectum. It is the size of a cucumber and I understand that she is in the advanced stages. I don’t have alot of details but I wondered what your thoughts would be on how serious this really is. I have to go see her if she could die anyday. She is 79 and has had breast cancer already. I can’t get alot of information over the phone but my relatives have given me some vague info with the promise of updates as soon as possible. Have you heard of this kind of thing and how serious do you think this could be. I just need an outsiders opinion to help me process this and make a decision on what I need to do. My family isn’t the best about taking care of one another and so I don’t even know if she has funeral arrangements and I may have to take care of everything.

A: I see patients 79 and older survive cancer everyday. Age really has little to do with it. It is the disease and the stage that matters most. It is impossible to advise you of anything without knowing what kind of cancer she has at a minimum. It is most likely a colon cancer and it doesn’t sound good. If it is blocking her rectum she will need surgery ASAP and it will be extensive. I’m not sure why you are relying on information from relatives call her doctor and get it directly from him or her.

A: That is an anal fissure. A small tear due to straining. They can heal if you give it rest and dont wipe hard.

Q: for about a month I sometimes get a dull feeling in my rectum. I cant say that it is a pain because it doesnt really hurt, it is just something i feel. it happens for only a second, then goes away. somedays i dont have it at all, somedays i have it more often than others. it seems to happen around my period mostly. it is causing me emotional distress because everytime it happens, i think i have a rectal tumor or rectal cancer. A: It’s normal. Nothing to do with what you eat. It’s kinda like having an itch or an eye twitch. Your first thought on any of those shouldn’t be cancer.
