Q: Hello. I’ve been kind of worried lately. See, I’m 14 and I think I might have TSS, but do not have all the symptoms. I am absolutely terrified of doctors, and refuse to go to the E.R.! Could anyone tell me what might cause severe back pain, sore throats and terrible headaches? Besides TSS?

A: TSS or Toxic Shock Syndrome is not caused by blood or the tampon itself. It is caused by damage done by a tampon left in the vagina too long. When a tampon is left in the vagina too long it begins to adhere to the sides of the vagina, the vaginal wall. When you remove the tampon it causes tears in the sides of the vaginal walls and these tears can harbor bacteria. This bacteria then has a great warm, damp place to grow and spread from. The problem with this bacteria is that generally you don’t know it is there and if you don’t know that there is a problem then you don’t do anything about it… see the problem? It is a fairly fast process, a matter of days from healthy to sick. The types of bacteria that can infect these tears in the vaginal wall can be drug resistant or can be difficult to kill off. For more information google TSS/ Toxic Shock Syndrome. There is a lot if information out there. I have been using tampons for years and have never had a problem. Remember to stay with the least amount of absorbency that you need. Don’t use a super if you only need a regular. This is can cause all sorts of damage. Try to remember to change your tampon regularly. If that means that you have to set a timer on your watch then do it… your heatlh is very important.

Why does leaving you tampon in for a long time cause TSS?

Q: I know that it can but never anywhere does it say WHY! Why does leaving a tampon in for a long time poosibly cause TSS? And what is the longest you should leave it in (I know it says 8 hours but is that just so the tampon companies are covered if someone does get it – I leave mine in for 8 hours – sometimes more all the time but how mcuh longer could I leave them in? WHY?

A: I don’t think it does always. I mean it’s not a given that leaving it in for a long time will equal TSS. I believe there has to be bacteria there anyway…does that make sense? Because it doesn’t always happen. Not that it’s worth the risk to not leave it in. I do think that longer than 8 hours is not such a good idea, although a few hours over shouldn’t matter unless something is wrong. Make sure you wash your hands before putting it in.
