A: Your doctor wouldn't be able to do anything anyway. Your muscle is probably just spasming. Put a heating pad on it. Take an anti-inflammatory like Advil or Aleve. Rest as much as you can. And see if you can't get someone to massage it a bit to work the knot out. They're going to have to massage very hard, and it probably won't feel good, but that's how you know you're working the knot out. And make sure after a massage like that, that you drink plenty of water. After a massage, it leaves toxins in your body; the water flushes it out.

They can smell terrible but they do work. Check with your pharmacist. You might also want to ask about muscle relaxers. They can make you tired but if the pain is that bad and the muscle that tight, try them. You may have to take them for a couple of days as directed but they can help also. A: You're describing an Active Trigger Point and any trigger point is difficult to self treat. If you're an athlete it's important to find out why you're getting them in the first place (ineffective stretching/warm up, bad foot mechanics, etc...). If you have an athletic trainer or a PTA they are the one you should be seeing.Massage is the best/most widely accepted treatment for trigger points. But there are other methods of treatment as well; stretch/spray, ultrasound, & electrostimulation.Ice is typically applied within the first 8-24 hours of an injury, and then heat for any time there after. The heat causes the blood vessels in the area to dilate and helps to flush the muscle of toxins and exudate and will hopefully allow the trigger point to relax.Ibuprofen is also a good over the counter med for muscle aches and pains just take as directed.Good luck.
