What is a decent bed time for a 14 year old kid?

Q: My daughter has been going to bed extremely late and i do not like to control her life but it is getting out of hand and she did not stop when ive already asked her twice. What would be a reasonable time for her to have to be in bed? She wakes up at 6:30 (and some days 5:30 for morning swim practice and is in 9th grade. plus she does about two hours of sports every day after school.Thanks for the help!

A: At her age, she needs 9.15 (9 and a quarter) hours of sleep per night. So if she wakes up 5:30, she should be in bed 8:30, going to bed at 8pm. I know that you don’t want to rule her life, but lack of sleep has been linked to worse grades, performance failure in sports, and worsened health. She’s still needing your guidance. On weekends she can set her own bedtime.
