Can doing drugs cause down syndrome to an unborn baby ?
Q: can smoking, drinking, cause your unborn baby to have down syndrome ?
A: NO having Down syndrome has NOTHING to do with drugs or alchohol use while pregnant. That is fetal alcohol syndrome. Im glad you asked this question though instead of just thinking you know something and really dont like some of these people that answered here. It is a genetic condition where the 21st chromosome has extra genetic material or an extra chromosome so the baby has 3 chromosome 21’s instead of the usual 2 in all of their cells, or some of their cells (mosaicism). It is just sort of a chance thing that happens when the splitting of genes occur with the mother and father’s DNA to create the baby. As a woman gets older, the eggs have a harder time splitting the chromosomes correctly giving older woman a higher chance of concieving a child with DS. But the majority of babies with DS are born to mothers under 35. Doing drugs/alcohol is harmful to the baby in many other ways but it does not cause DS, or trisomy 18, 14, xxy, xxxy, etc. I think you get the hint. I was such a health freak when I was pregnant, no drugs/alcohol and I ate all the right food groups and I was 24 when I got pregnant. My son was born with Mosaic Down syndrome. He is doing great. I know that sometimes people look at me and think, “she must have done drugs when she was pregnant” and that sucks, but screw what other people think. I have had to learn that in the fullest since my son has been born with all the idiotic stares, thoughts, and comments. Especially since I already may have that label since Im tattoed and pierced and young. Thank you for your question, I always enjoy people getting the correct info! Take care.
Will taking tylenol pm during early pregnancy cause Down Syndrome?
Q: I accidentally took two tylenol pm while I was about 4 weeks pregnant. Does anyone think this will cause the baby to have Down Syndrome or a Neural Tube Defect? I called the Doc and she said it was fine. But I just am paranoid I guess!!:)
A: Down syndrome is not due to Tylenol 🙂 It is an extra chromosome. When we are pregnant we do worry about every little thing and this is normal. Our maternal instincts set in wanting to protect our child from the time we conceive through out their whole life. Once a mother always a mother and regardless on how old one gets we always worry over them. It is called motherhood and a never ending love.
