It’s similar to drowning, except recovery is quicker because you can exhale the helium.This is not a good practice and any harm it does do is permanent in that once the brain cells are dead they do not recover or regrow. What happens is your brain will reroute circuits as it can to compensate for the loss, but there is only so much it can do in that respect.
