Does swallowing helium kill Brain Cells?
Q: I swallowed about a balloon full of helium 4 days ago. Did this harm me in anyway? I'm worried cause I'm not sure if this is going to harm me permanently.Thanks.
A: Helium is an inert gas, and won't hurt you fromone balloon. The danger with helium is thatwhen you are breathing helium, you are notbreathing oxygen, so you can pass out, orworse, suffocate. It's ok once in a while, but overdo it and youwill be saying hello to Michael Jackson.

Q: does Helium kill brain cells? Like a lot of brain cells?More then weed and alcohol?I was sucking on helium and I fell on the floor, my boyfriend called I umm.. got it out of my pocket, put it up to my ear, and just kept on saying "hello hello hello hello hello"..the phone kept ringing because I didnt open it. after a few seconds (im guessing) i finally snapped out of it and aswered the phone.but uhh anyway I was just wondering did I do any perminent harm?Or kill a lot of brain cells?P.s... I've only sucked on enough helium to fall down about 3-4 times in my whole life.1 of those times when I was a little kid and I had the idea if I suck on enough my voice would stay that way.....yea. I was about 6 years old.
A: Helium itself is non-toxic and does not kill brain cells directly. What happens (and the reason you pass out or fall down) is it displaces oxygen so you literally suffocate yourself. This causes your brain to be deprived of oxygen and that will kill brain cells. It's similar to drowning, except recovery is quicker because you can exhale the helium. This is not a good practice and any harm it does do is permanent in that once the brain cells are dead they do not recover or regrow. What happens is your brain will reroute circuits as it can to compensate for the loss, but there is only so much it can do in that respect.
Does sucking in helium kill brain cells?
Q:
A: Breathing in pure helium deprives the body of oxygen, as if you were holding your breath. If you couldn't breathe at all, you'd start to die in minutes—as soon as your body exhausted the supply of oxygen stored in the blood. But helium speeds up this process: When the gas fills your lungs, it creates a diffusion gradient that washes out the oxygen. In other words, each breath of helium you take sucks more oxygen out of your system. After inhaling helium, the body's oxygen level can plummet to a hazardous level in a matter of seconds.
