A: The standard rapid flu test kits have a detection rate of less than 50% for the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. We actually put a disclaimer on the test results that a negative result does not rule out influenza infection. We send a sample to the state DOH on all hospitalized patients that were admitted with flu like symptoms. More than half of the positive H1N1 sample results we have got back from them had negative rapid flu tests. The rapid test is a good test for seasonal flu (detects about 75%), and is fairly reliable if it comes up positive, but negatives not so much.
