What is the most common thing for someone with end stage liver disease to die from?
Q: My father has been diagnosed with end stage liver failure since September 25, 2006 and just yesterday his doctor called me saying that i needed to bring him to the hospital his kidneys are failing and then today he had a heart-attack, his potassium levels are really high too, anyone have any idea how long i have left with my dad?
A: You need to speak with his doctors. They have all his medical records and alsohis test results. They can give you anestimate, based on all this, of how long yourDad may have. Let me explain what takes place in liver failure. There are many different causes of liver problems. These causes can damage theliver cells. When this happens, the immunesystem of the body responds to this damage andcan cause inflammation to develop inside theliver which will cause the liver to enlarge insize. If the cause of the problem can be removed, and the inflammation treated…thenthe cells may heal. If this doesn’t take place…it can progress to death of the liver cells andscar tissue forming inside the liver that blocksthe flow of blood to any healthy cells that areleft and also block the flow of blood throughthe liver on its way back to the heart. This disease is then known as cirrhosis of the liver. It is progressive and there is no cure. The liver handles toxins that come into thebody, to convert them to a non toxic form. The liver is no longer able to do this efficiently and the toxins build up in the blood. Thekidneys then try to remove these toxins ontop of the job they normally do. This putsadded stress on the kidneys and they are nextin line to go into failure after the liver does. With having end stage liver failure, the kidneysnot functioning well, and the fact of havinga heart attack…the prognosis is not very good. They can try to stablize him…putting him ona dialysis machine to help the kidneys functionbetter…to bring the electrolytes into balance. It will depend on how far advanced he is inthe end stage liver failure, kidney problems, and how his heart responds to therapy. Wish I could be more uplifting…
Can you die from liver disease?
Q:
A: It depends on what caused the liver disease andif it can be reversed before it gets to the stagewhere the liver cells die off. Here are some of the causes of liver disease:alcohol consumption, mediation toxification, chemical exposure, hereditary conditions, biliary obstruction or mal formation, auto immune disease, viral infections likehepatitis A,B,C,etc., fatty liver disease and thereare others. When the liver cells become damaged, fromone of these causes, the immune system ofthe body responds to this and causes inflammation to develop in the liver. If the cause can be stopped or removed andthe inflammation is treated…the liver diseasecan be reversed. However, if the cells startto die off and the patient is diagnosed ashaving cirrhosis…then it cannot be reversed. The patient will either need a liver transplantto live or they will die. The liver does over500 functions to keep the body working well…without it, a person cannot live. Hope this information helps you.
my aunt has liver disease. will she die from it?
Q: i dont know what type of liver disease.. but its really bad. its from alcohol. is it fatal? any info would help. thanks.
A: It’s hard to say; if she is still drinking, then it will most likely progress. If she is having symptoms of end stage liver disease (ESLD), then there is little that can be done unless she can document she has abstained from alcohol for at least 6 months. If that is the case, then she may be eligible for a liver transplant. Best wishes.
