Top Industries for Career Shifts

People all over the country are talking about the challenges with securing employment. For some, they aren’t sure where to look and others have written off certain jobs in certain industries. According to Laurence Shatkin, PhD, author of “2011 Career Plan: The Best Moves Now for a Solid Future”, there are 11 fields projected to grow the fastest through 2018. US News later listed several companies that are hiring this year which parallel a few of the industries Shatkin mentions. If you are looking for a new career in a different industry, perhaps you should consider the following:

1. Healthcare Industry (Medifast): This firm is a producer of weight loss foods for men and women, but please don’t confuse them with health care companies. Their products are clinically proven and physicians have been recommending them since 1980. Their current positions range from center manager to warehouse tech.

2.Tech Industry (Facebook): With 750 million+ users, I would imagine that they will need a few more hands around the company to fill open positions. Facebook has 70 translations available on their site; 70% of their users are outside of the US with 250 million users accessing Facebook from their phones. If you’ve never thought about a career in social media, perhaps you should. The departments listed on their career page include sales and development, legal, communications, HR, and product management. In addition to Facebook, Google is currently hiring. With 8 pages of open positions around the globe, perhaps a new job in another country will provide you with a much needed career boost.

3. Services Industry (Wal-Mart): This company was founded in 1962, almost 50 years ago and serves customers/members more than 200 million times per week. Last year’s sales alone were $405 billion! Retail isn’t for everyone, but every large organization has a corporate office if working in the stores isn’t to your liking. Shatlin feels that customer service representatives are in demand since this role is listed under multiple industries.

4. Scientific Engineering Industry (Boeing): If you are interested in engineering and/or aerospace, Boeing could possess your dream job. They are looking to fill thousands of positions this year according to US News and there benefits are inviting. I wouldn’t mind working for a company that offers paid time for 12 standard holidays, including a winter break from 12/24-1/1, wellness and educational benefits, as well as an employee incentive plan.

Although this economy is tough, there are jobs to be found with reputable organizations. Who knows? Your next job may be where you least expect it since it could possibly be in a different industry. Transferring your skills to a new industry could turn out better than you anticipated, especially if you are looking in an industry that’s looking to hire.
