Show-Stoppers at the 83rd Annual Emmys

COMMENTARY | After waiting all week to see what the 83rd Annual Emmys would bring, and of course to cheer on my favorite office manager, Michael Scott, I was left entertained, horrified and in tears. From heartfelt acceptance speeches to the biggest loser, there were a few things that made a lasting impression.

Charlie Sheen crashes the Emmys

After losing his role as America’s bad boy, Charlie Sheen took the stage again, but this time to annoy, horrify, and give the creators of “Two and a Half Men” a questionable apology. Although he was only announcing the winner for the lead male actor, Sheen managed to become the night’s biggest loser.

He tried to give his sincerest apology to his former bosses, but it just came out as a worn-out publicity stunt. The audience was giving him pity laughs to fill in the awkward gaps he left with his poor choice of jokes and timing of apology.

Melissa McCarthy’s show-stopping speech

When the category for best lead actress in a comedy series came around, hilarious women including Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the stage as if they were in a beauty pageant. As many talented women waited to hear their name, Melissa McCarthy’s name was announced to my surprise.

Her speech was full of subtle humor embraced by heartfelt thanks, bringing me to tears while she choked back hers. Being a Midwestern girl myself, it was nice to see an Illinois native take the big stage with gratefulness to her small-town roots.

Stunning gowns and hideous fits

I anticipate Emmy fashion may be more than the speeches, awkward moments, and skits. This year I was in awe at all of the beautiful red dresses that hugged the curves perfectly but one struck me as absolutely dazzling! Nancy O’Dell won the best dressed but not because of her body-hugging gown, but in part of her turquoise earrings. The color of her earrings really made the dress stand out amongst the crown.

On the other hand, I was utterly appalled when Margo Martindale appeared. She is a larger fit, but that doesn’t mean you can just throw on the frumpiest dress you find. Her dress did not flatter; in fact, it accentuated all the wrong aspects of her body. The skirt was characteristic of a cheap skirt you would find at a cheap prom dress retailer. To get a better understanding of how atrocious it was, see for yourself here.

Overall, the 83rd Emmys were a huge success in my book. The medley by the “SNL” short crew was fantastic, as was the humor tied in throughout. While I loved the show, I was still disappointed Steve Carrel didn’t take home his deserved Emmy. Stephen Colbert also got the shaft when Jon Stewart took home every possible Emmy even though the “Colbert Report” is much more entertaining than “The Daily Show.”
