A few days ago, my wife did a bit of grocery shopping and brought home some snacks to put in my daughter’s school lunches. Most of the things she bought were items that my daughter has had before and loved. However, she also did buy something a bit different; Hostess Streusel Cinnamon Cakes.
When I first saw this product, my first impression of them is they reminded me a bit of coffee cake and, when I saw they had cinnamon in them, I decided I wanted to try one of these myself. In fact, I ended up opening the box that very night.
The cakes were OK but, to be perfectly honest, I’ve had better.
One of the first things I noticed about these cakes is they were a bit on the small side. They were a good size for my 7-year-old daughter. But, they were smaller than they looked on the box and weren’t much of anything to a full-grown adult like me. They wouldn’t be a filling mid-afternoon snack and I’m not even completely sure they had enough substance to them to be a decent sized dessert either. And, I can tell you from experience that they did very little to satisfy my appetite (I was definitely still hungry after eating one of these and found myself looking for something else).
As far as taste goes, these weren’t the worst cakes I’ve had. But, once again, I was a bit disappointed by them; especially since I have had plenty of other Hostess items that I have loved. They seemed to be a bit too plain. It was just cake without anything to add extra flavor (such as chocolate). Yes, there was cinnamon. But, that was used pretty sparingly and, at least in the two cakes I tried out of that box (I gave them a second chance when I saw my daughter wasn’t eating these), there was only a small part of the cake that actually had any.
As I mentioned before, I normally like items from the Hostess brand. But, this is one item I honestly was not impressed with. If the company were to add a bit more cinnamon to them or even make the cakes slightly bigger, I might change my mind about them. But, in their present form, I don’t see this being a product we would buy again. If you have not tried these before, I recommend looking for something else from the Hostess brand instead.
