Abby: Sharon Needles, you are without question the contestant the fans seem the most curious about because you are unlike anyone we have seen on RuPaul’s Drag Race so far. I would like to say that your “Horror Drag” is amazing! Who has been your biggest drag inspiration and why?
Sharon: My drag inspirational is Elvira. She’s spooky, ditzy, funny, and sexy. But most important, approachable!
Abby: I love Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Elvira, AKA Cassandra Peterson, was born in Kansas. Where were you born and where do you live now?
Sharon: I was born in Newton, Iowa, and I now haunt Pittsburgh, Transylvania.
Abby: How do you keep that wonderful figure?
Sharon: With embalming fluid.
Abby: That’s a great tip. I’m old so I suspect I’ll be trying some soon. Do you have a favorite form of exercise?
Sharon: Hulu Hooping!
Abby: What do you consider your greatest asset to be?
Sharon: My greatest asset is my ability to make people laugh.
Abby: Did you ever get stage fright?
Sharon: I’m too stupid to be afraid. I’m usually the one doing the frightening!
Abby: What celebrity would you like to see in drag?
Sharon: Although he’s dead, I would love to have seen Vincent Price in drag. He puts the Gore in gorgeous, hunty!
Abby: Chad Michaels said that the scariest thing that ever happened to him in drag was meeting you. What was the scariest thing that ever happened to you in drag?
Sharon: I can tell you a lot of scary sh*t from my life, but none of it will come from my life of being a drag queen. Drag has a way of making you invincible to fear.
Abby: What was your funniest experience buying women’s clothes/shoes?
Sharon: One time a sales girl whispered “excuse me sir, but you’re in the women’s section.” As if I didn’t know!
Abby: How tall are the tallest pair of heels you have ever worn?
Sharon: The tallest pair of heels I’ve ever owned were 8 inches. Just like my ex-boyfriend!
Abby: I’m not touching that ex-boyfriend comment! Let’s move on to RuPaul’s Drag Race. I know you can’t talk about the season coming up so what was your favorite moment from the previous seasons?
Sharon: One of my favorite moments in RuPaul’s Drag Race history is when Nina Flowers asked Tori Spelling about her HIV. Classic!
Abby: Who did you want to win RPDR from season 1, 2 and 3?
Sharon: From season one Nina Flowers or Tammie Brown. From season two Raven or JuJuBee. From season three either Raja or Mimi Imfirst. But I love them all!
Abby: Sharon, please fill in the blank. RuPaul’s Drag Race is like?
Sharon: RuPaul’s Drag race is like Stockholm Syndrome. At first you’re terrified but by the end, you never want to leave!
Abby: For those of us who can’t get enough of you, where can we see you perform live?
Sharon: My fans can catch me every other Saturday at the Blue Moon and monthly at the Brillobox in Pittsburgh. But keep an eye out, I may be performing at a local haunt near you!
Thank you Sharon Needles for taking the time to let us get to know you a little better. Referring to Sharon Needles as simply a drag queen doesn’t seem sufficient. Perhaps in addition to calling her a drag queen we add the title Drag Queen of Darkness or Horror Drag Specialist. Maybe by the end of the season Sharon will let us know how she really wants to be addressed. This year I suspect that because of Sharon Needles’ horror drag influence the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror may have to consider RuPaul’s Drag Race for a Saturn Award. I cannot wait to see how Sharon does on the show.
