Kate Upton Gets Cover of S.I. Swimsuit Edition, but Won’t Get Best-Selling Issue Title

COMMENTARY | Sure it’s Valentine’s Day, but it seems all the rage is over the new issue of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Photo’s have been leaked and copies have been distributed in Michigan; meanwhile boyfriends and husbands are trying to sell their significant others on the fact they’re excited about the day of love, not Kate Upton. So who is this girl? And how did she land the coveted front page of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition?

And the cover of S.I. Swimsuit Edition goes to Kate Upton!

The latest leaked photos involve a scantily clad model, Kate Upton. The cover is trending like crazy after TMZ reported some issues were being sold in Michigan ahead of the Valentine’s Day debut. Given the low profile of her name, the buzz surrounding this issue could make this issue a major contender for some of the best. She’s practically naked in a red string bikini that has many eyes turning her way.

So who is Kate Upton?

When you think of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover, you think big names like Tyra Banks, Cheryl Tiegs, Heidi Klum, and other supermodels, but Kate Upton hasn’t quite reached that mark, so why did she get the coveted spot? If you take one look at the cover you will know why, but it seems she was well on her way after being named S.I.’s rookie of the year in 2011. She began her modeling career in her teenage years and quickly became a favorite for swimsuit shoots with her curvy, top-heavy figure. From there she interpreted a dance at the Staples Center at a basketball game becoming a viral sensation. Kate has even made it to the big screen with an appearance in “Tower Heist” with co-stars Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy.

Kate Upton’s Swimsuit Edition Competition

Just looking at the media attention surrounding her S.I. Swimsuit Edition cover, you would think she was on track to be one of the best selling covers. So to put things back in perspective, I thought I would take a look back at what it would take to be the top-selling cover model. The best-selling cover model was Kathy Ireland, and she beat out hundreds of models to take the spot. This was in 1989 for S.I.’s 25th Anniversary Edition and hasn’t been beat yet. Considering big names haven’t even been able to take the best-selling title, it looks as though Kate Upton has no chance either.
