It’s a Given Which Game is the Game of the Year

Deus Ex: Human Revolution seems to be the latest talk in the gaming world. Deus Ex, a human revolution based game, was announced in May of 2007 and it came out in August of 2011. Reviews have been posted on various gaming sites and several trailers were posted before the game came out, grabbing the attention of many. Some gamers rated this game a 4 out of 5 due to the fact that it leaves you with little understanding of certain parts such as the praxis points that you are given, but many have also said the rating is lower than what it should be. Most of the comments made were regarding the way the game was set up, including the graphics. There is one thing, however, that does not have much negative feedback what so ever, even from the tougher critics, and it is the storyline.

This is the 3rd game in a series that is actually the prequel to the original game. The original Deus Ex game was made for PC, but later on went onto the PS2 under the name of Deus Ex: The Conspiracy. Created by Ion Storm Inc. and published by Eidos Interactive, it came out in the year 2000. Next, Deus Ex: Invisible War came out in 2003. This time, Eidos Montreal developed the game, and Square Enix published it. One thing these games do not have in common are the creators and publishers, but even with this difference, it still keeps the original storyline going or in Dues Ex: Human Revolution’s case, it brings forth new and exciting information about how Adam came to be augmented and the person he turned out to be as time went on.

The year is 2027, 25 years before the original Deus Ex setting. You are in the Sarif Industries headquarters making arrangements for security preparations for the company’s upcoming presence at a National Science Board to discuss the augmentation findings. Megan Reed, who happens to be Adam’s girlfriend, discovered how people can become augmented without having to use anti-rejection drugs. She seems nervous about the discovery by her and her workers as she speaks to you. As you ride an elevator to go to a meeting she leaves you and you are on your own until you get to where you need to be. Finally, you reach the meeting and shortly after you arrive the company gets attacked; this is where the game begins for the player. Since this game is very open, you find yourself walking the halls trying to find the enemies and destroy them. At the end of your searching, though, and maybe if you killed off some people, you are then beaten and shot. The enemies burn the victims and now your adventure really begins.

You can see as you play the game that it has a very open-ended nature about it. But you can play however you want to. Even though this is a role-playing shooter type of game you don’t need to treat it as such. You can play the game in a combat way by killing off everyone you see, a stealth way, and two others (exploration and hacker) which include one or both of the others mentioned. If stealth sounds like you then I must tell you that there are ways to not be violent in every scenario. At certain times within the game, you can even be a hacker. If exploring is more of your way then you can explore instead and maybe find hidden areas to be stealthier when dealing with your enemies while still picking up some more experience. There are certain rewards for how you play the game as long as you stick to that specific game play.

I had the privilege to purchase this game when it came out, and I must say in the beginning I wasn’t too impressed. You basically had unlimited ammo, which was awesome, and your health regenerated pretty quickly. You don’t have the super human abilities and it seems like almost any other shooting/stealth game out there today, but once you get passed the very beginning everything changes. Some changes are for the better and some of the worst, but all in all it is pretty good. I’ve never played the other games in the series, which was not a problem for me considering this game is just the beginning.

A quick tip for those who are playing, and for those who have not yet played it, listening to the conversations and reading the various emails and articles lying around will be helpful for tips. Some are even pretty funny. I would recommend this game to everyone, even those people who do not like shooting games. You don’t have to constantly shoot people to play the game. You can play it using stealth and still beat the game. The graphics are decent and the storyline is amazing. Being able to say what you want in conversations and being able to play in different ways is what makes this game the game of the year.
