How to Reduce Kitty Litter Waste and Reduce Odor

Kitty litter liners or “Cat Pan Liners” as some brands call them are like miniature trash bags that are just small enough to fit the bottom of a pan for kitty litter. When kitty litter is poured into the liner it is great for kitty’s bathroom but as an end result you will have to scoop out the excrement or throw the whole liner away. Kitty litter can get expensive so throwing away litter that could still be used can add to that expense.

Fitting chicken coop wire to the size of the pan and covering it with kitty litter can help to filter litter in one big scoop instead of having to scoop individual feces out. Make sure to snip off any ends of the wire that are sharp and can cut. On opposite sides of the chicken wire bend a spoon handle around the wire and leave the spoon resting on the outside of the pan. Be sure to use old spoons or spoons that you don’t want. When kitty has filled the pan lift the chicken wire up by the spoons and give it a shake while holding it over the pan. Dump the waste into a bag that is going to be disposed of.

Keeping your kitty litter smelling good can also prolong the use of litter in the pan. Breakdown of kitty waste may be accomplished by using “septic system treatments” such as “Rid-X.” The bacteria and enzymes that products such as “Rid-X” contain may eat on the feces from kitty and cut down the smell that can build up. Before adding a septic product to the litter pan read the label to make sure that there isn’t anything poisonous or some ingredient that can harm kitty or anyone else. You’ll also want to make sure that the product doesn’t give off any toxic fumes.

Another thing that can reduce kitty litter odor is bath salts. It’s probably best to mix bath salts in with the kitty litter since bath salts can get expensive. Besides it would take a lot of bath salts to fill up a kitty litter pan.

One last trick to cutting kitty litter odor is to line the bottom of the liner with “Odor Eaters” before adding the litter. Since “Odor Eaters” help to zap odor in shoes they would likely do so for the litter pan. All you need is one “Odor Eater” or the full pair to help tackle the smell.
