Head Football Coach and Math Teacher Extraordinaire

Head Coach Andrew Young, 31 is prepared for his second year of coaching at Glenn Hills High School where he has high expectations for his students as well as his football players.

This coach’s bloodline is heavily steeped in football. His father who was also a coach, played for the Pittsburg Steelers from 1971-1973; his three brothers played H.S. and college ball. Therefore, coach has the benefit of drawing from a rich lineage of experience to extend to his players.

Coach Young is starting out the year with a young team. His starting line-up has six seniors with the rest being groomed to be great up and coming players. His self proclaimed characterization of his coaching demeanor replicates that of the style of Tony Dungee, former Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts, just to name a couple.

Although he will be fair and disciplined with his team, he will be firm, and anticipates wins because he is not intimidated by having a young team. His expectations, Coach Young says are, “To improve every game and finish out the year strong. As long as they do what we coach them to do in practice, there shouldn’t be a problem, even being a young team.”

It probably doesn’t hurt being a math teacher which most likely is helpful when it comes to variables, physics and calculus as it pertains to his playbook.

Richmond County has several high schools of which eight have football teams, according to Coach Young. He’s optimistic about his chances in the region, and is hopeful every game will be a success, and also has hopes of making the Playoff’s this year.

The Opener Game is Friday against Lakeside High School. “It’s going to be a difficult game they have a lot of experienced players, they have a lot of people on defense, a good quarterback, and a larger school. We can’t afford to make mistakes,” Coach explains.

Currently, there are two students being recruited by Georgia Tech. and Georgia South. They are Germaine Tait, Running Back and Ernesto Wynn, Defensive Tackle; obviously, two very talented senior athletes.

In addition, potential upcoming players mentioned are Earl Cobb, and Khalige Flegar, Wide Receiver, both players are sophomores.

Glenn Hills High School will play West Side High School in the 2011 Homecoming Game.
