“Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” and Other Sequels that Were Not Needed

Let us be honest and say that the original “Ghost Rider” film was not something that would be considered a classic. However, for some insane reason the decision was made to make a sequel. This is usually done to attempt to cash-in on the success of the original movie.

Sequels usually do quite well in the box office. Nevertheless, they rarely live up to the original film. It is often said that sequels are never as good. In fact, they are regularly terrible and tarnish our opinion of the first film. Sometimes sequels are decent enough, but are just unnecessary additions.

Therefore, with all that in mind, I thought it be fun to look at five other films that did not need sequels.

“Mirrors 2″

I enjoyed the original “Mirrors” film with Kiefer Sutherland. Therefore, when this sequel was on my “Lovefim Watch Online” service I was naturally intrigued to watch it. However, this 2010 film does not stack up. It stars Nick Stahl and Emmanuelle Vaugier.

It seems the producers were not expecting a strong performance from the movie, because it was released direct-to-DVD.

“Butterfly Effect 2″

This 2006 movie is a sequel to the original film. Erica Durance and Eric Lively are the main actors. This is another feature that did not get a cinema release. This sequel received a poor reception from critics. It was suggested that the story added nothing to the original, and the lead male character was not likeable.

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”

I am a big fan of the original trilogy of films, having seen them all at the cinema. This new English language film is not a sequel of the films or even a remake. However, it is a new film adaptation of the book from Stieg Larsson.

Something I question the need for. What makes the original movies good is the authenticity of the story with the Swedish cast. The fact that it is necessary to read subtitles detracts nothing from the beautiful films.

Making them all again in English with USA and European cast members suggests that the originals were not good enough. However, they were and should have been left to enjoy the limelight.

“Final Destination 2″

The “Final Destination” series just keeps on going. I enjoyed the first movie and found it to be a unique concept. However, the subsequent films have tarnished that image. Part of the problem is no new elements have been added.

After the first movie, the series of films are the same. It is obvious what is going to happen, and it does exactly in the same way. However, I suppose these films will keep being made, because they still make money.

“Paranormal Activity 2″

Some people may think this is a controversial choice. “Paranormal Activity 2″ made $177million in worldwide box office takings; a third movie has now also been made. However, in my opinion the appeal has been lost.

The idea of a ghost movie filmed in home-video style was a good one. Unfortunately, the second film fails to add new elements or change things up. The end result is a movie that does not have the same impact as the original.
