Decorating Ideas for a Nautical Themed Nursery

As a child, one of my favorite places was the spare bedroom at my Nana’s house. My cousins and I always called it “the ship room,” because the entire room was filled with ships, lighthouses and other nautical themed decor. The room seemed to have an element of adventure to it, as my imagination would spend sleepless nights thinking about all of the places I could go if the wooden ship models were real.

This article is inspired by the ship room in my nana’s house, a room that continues to be one of my favorite places today. A nautical themed nursery will provide your baby with a warm and nurturing space. The decor is age appropriate, but is not so childish that you will have to redecorate before your child reaches his toddler years. Here are some ideas to help you get started on decorating your baby’s room with a fun and adventurous nautical theme.

Ship or Ocean Themed Linens

Ship or ocean themed linens are a must in your baby’s nautical nursery. You can display blankets or curtains that feature images of ships, lighthouses or sea creatures depending on your preferences. Most baby retailers will have some kind of nautical themed baby bedding to decorate the crib, and you can easily make your own curtains using nautical themed material available at any sewing supply store.

Lighthouse Statues

Lighthouse statutes are a fun way to dress up shelves or window sills in your nautical themed nursery. You can purchase lighthouse statues at any interior decorating retailer or buy unfinished statues from a craft store and paint them yourself. These will fit the theme of your baby’s nursery perfectly.

Ship Wheel Wall Decor

Find an old wooden ship wheel online or at a flea market and hang in on the wall above your baby’s crib. This is an excellent way to add style and personality to the walls of the nursery while keeping true to your nautical theme. You can even sand and repaint the ship wheel to match the color scheme of the room.

Ship-in-a-Bottles

Ship-in-a-bottles are something I found to be fascinating as a young child, as I spent hours trying to figure out how a ship could get through an opening so small. While I now know the secret to how these fun knick knacks are made, they are still one of my favorite elements of home decor. You can purchase ship-in-a-bottles at craft and interior design stores, and they are perfect for decorating a book shelf or wall shelf in your baby’s nursery.

Seashell Baby Mobile

Make your own one-of-a-kind baby mobile by hanging sea shells in an assortment of colors from fishing line. You will need to punch out a small hole in each shell using a safety pin, and then simply thread the fishing line through and tie it in a knot. Fill four to six strands of fishing line that are approximately a foot long with sea shells, and then attach the fishing line to a circle-shaped piece of wire to hang above your baby’s crib.
