Decorating for Winter: Fun for the Whole Season

I’m a big fan of seasonal decorating. That means that while I of course decorate for the major holidays, I also decorate for the seasonal changes. I’m lucky to live in an area with distinct seasons which makes seasonal decorating a lot more fun.

Bring out the quilts
I tend to have a cozier look in winter; lots of quilts and throws on chairs and the sofa. I will even use quilts as a table covering for my farmhouse style dining table. It’s a great way to bring warmth into the house.

Use candles
I like to use candles in winter to bring in a cheerful glow on grey days. One hit is to take a pretty flower vase and put a taper candle into it. Hold it with one hand and with the other pour in sea salt or pebbles to hold the candle upright. This looks beautiful on a dining table.

Change the artwork on your walls
An artist friend of mine once told me that after 3 months most people no longer “see” the art on their walls. I took that as a cue to have 4 seasons of wall prints. None are very expensive, they are all the same size and they all store in a single frame. I just take the frame down, move the current print to the back and re-hang the frame.

Rearrange the furniture
I actually suggest having a spring/summer arrangement and a fall/winter arrangement. The fall/winter arrangement is cozier and more intimate. Not only does this give you room for a Christmas tree but you also get a fresh new look to the room without spending any money.

Change all the Linen
I change the linen rotation for the bedrooms, bathrooms and even the kitchen towels. I tend to use jewel tones for comforters and blankets in winter to warm up the bedrooms. Even the towels are on a spring/summer fall/winter rotation. Most of the house is in warm earth tones. It makes for a cozier home while the snow is falling.
