Composer Robin Chatterjee had been one of the greatest composers of Bengali film music in the 50s and 60s. Agradoot was one of the commercial directors who had contributed the most in the films of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen, the greatest hero and heroin of Bengali films of all times.
The romantic innings of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen started with the brilliance of Robin Chatterjee’s music in the film Sabar Upore in 1955. The film was directed by Agradoot. The brilliant songs in the film included “ghum ghum chand jhikimiki tara” sung by Sandhya Mukherjee and “kataro aghate chino paye rokto jhore” sung by Dhananjoy Bhattacharya.
Robin Chatterjee was excellent in the film Pathe Holo Deri released in 1957. All the songs sung by Sandhya Mukherjee in the film became super hit including “e sudhu ganer din”, “ei chayaghera logone aaj ke dake amar”, “tumi naa hoy rohite kache”, to name a few. Robin Chatterjee mesmerized the Bengali viewers with his brilliant composition in Agradoot’s film Lalubhulu. All the songs in the film had been sung by classical singer Manobendra Mukherjee, including “ei pranjharona jaglo”, “dukkho amar shesh kore dao prabhu”, “dukher pothe namli Jodi”, “akash o mor alloy decho bhore”, “jaar hiya akasher neel nilimay”, “surjo tomar prothom toron kholo”, to name a few. The film became a blockbuster with the central characters being a blind boy and his handicapped friend. It was remade in hindi with the tile Dosti in 1964.
Robin Chatterjee’s dream combination with Agradoot continued in the films Bipasha with Sandhya Mukherjee’s legendary song “klantir poth Jodi ba phuralo mor”, and “ami sapne tomay dekhechi”. One article is too small to cover the great combination of Robin Chatterjee with director Agradoot. But as long as romantic films in Bengali celluloid will be preserved, the works of Robin Chatterjee and Agradoot cannot be ignored. They have become immortal over the years.
