Christmas Festivities Near Louisville, Kentucky

Traveling around to view Christmas light displays is a time-honored tradition for some families. However, with time and funds running short in today’s weak economy, families are looking for a one-stop-shop when it comes to holiday celebrations. In and around Louisville, Kentucky there are three places you and your family can go to see some great Christmas light displays. Here are more details about these three great locations.

Mega Cavern’s “Lights under Louisville

The “Mega Cavern” is located at 1841 Taylor Avenue, Louisville, KY 40213. The cavern was created years ago by limestone miners. During the holiday season, the “Mega Cavern” turns into one of the best Christmas light displays in Louisville, Kentucky. The 30 to 40 minute drive through that cavern will take your family past over 500 lit characters and 1,000,000 points of light. For this tour you and your family/group are allowed to drive your own vehicle through the cavern. “Lights under Louisville” is open from November, 18, 2011 to January, 1, 2012. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday 6pm to 10pm and 5pm to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday. The admission price varies depending on the type of vehicle you have. Freeman lake park’s “Christmas in the Park

“Christmas in the Park” is located at 140 Freeman Lake Park Rd, Freeman Lake Park, Elizabethtown, KY 42701. This tour offers over 100 Christmas light displays that are spread along 1.5 miles of road through the park. All of the displays are donated to the park by the community. This attraction is open to the public beginning November, 23,2011 and will be available until January, 1, 2011. “Christmas in the Park” is free for all visitors. Light up Louisville

“Light up Louisville ” is located at Metro Hall at the corner of Sixth and Jefferson streets. This event is different from the events listed above. “Light up Louisville ” features a Christmas light display along with fireworks, a parade, children activities, and more. Santa Claus himself will also make an appearance during the festivities. “Light up Louisville” kicks off November, 25, 2011 at 3pm with the 5k walk/run event. Santa Claus is set to arrive around 8:30pm. He will then join Louisville’s mayor to “Light up Louisville” with 1000s of Christmas lights. Although many of the festivities will come to an end, the Christmas light displays will remain until after January, 1, 2011.
