A Novice Review of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

PlayStation released a few console bundles just in time for the holidays in 2011. I was in need of an upgrade on my console at the time and narrowed my search down to two bundles in particular. PS was offering a 320GB PS3 with either inFamous 2 or Uncharted 3 for just $5 more than a regular PS3. After being gifted a copy of inFamous 2 my choice was obvious. Having never played an Uncharted game I was eager to see what all of the fuss was about.

Story line
There is not much detail I can give about the actual story line without giving away too much. Let us just say it is the familiar ‘race to get there first and fight along the way’ type of game. If you are not familiar with the series, starting with Drake’s Deception will not be a set-back for you. The story line early on in the game consists mostly of flashbacks that really help build the story and let you know what you need to play the game without prior knowledge of its predecessors. If you are acquainted with the games, you will be pleased to find the same familiar characters still hard at work. Fans of the series will be very interested to see what happens to their old pals as the story progresses.

Graphics
Unique camera angles and excellent shading are some things I can praise in this game. The graphics are impressive. Someone over at Naughty Dog has a very good understanding of light and shadow. I really can’t praise the attention to detail in this game enough. Scenes in this game transition easily and smoothly from game play to movie and back again. This also tells how great the graphics are (movie quality). For some this is a definite plus, for me this was a minus. At times I didn’t realize I was supposed to start controlling the character, or that I no longer had control.

Game Play
I am not a fan of games that dictate where you will be and what you can do while you are there. If I want linear progression I will read a book. Having said this, it is pretty apparent this is not a game for people like me. My preference is for an open world game, where I at least FEEL like I am in charge of what will go down and when. This game is pretty straight forward about your tasks and how they should be accomplished. Normally this is frustrating for me because things have to be done a certain way, but the hints from your fellow character progressed these tasks along smoothly. As far as replay ability goes I give this game a 3- I think that’s the maximum amount of plays you could get out of before being bored if you enjoy it from the start.

Is Drake’s Deception a disappointment or a masterpiece? I would say it’s a little of both. The visuals of this game are stunning-and thereby merit enough to label it a masterpiece. The game play is great if you are a fan of the series or linear games. The line of who should and who shouldn’t play this game is pretty clearly drawn. If you are more of a free spirit when it comes to games this will be a major disappointment for you.
