A Drug Free Way to Treat Toenail Fungus at Home

Toe nail fungus is a hard problem for many people. Dermatopytes multiply making the nail thick, yellow and deformed. It is not a pretty sight. I have seen friends struggle with yellowing nails. While I was taking an interest in herbal arts and alternative medicines they would come up to me and ask what could be done at home without the harsh prescription medicines that cause havoc on the body. I found there are some excellent over the counter topical remedies to treat this pervasive problem.

A topical application is when the remedy is placed directly on the nail, nail edges and under the nail when possible. It is important to try to get as much remedy as possible safely under the nail and into the nail bed.

Topical Application Guidelines:

1. Cleanse and dry feet thoroughly prior to the application.

2. Have a clean pair of cotton / natural material socks ready to wear after each application to allow the wicking away of moisture and to prevent re-infection. Wash the dirty socks in hot water prior to wearing again.

3. Take care not to contaminate the remedy during the application process. Use cotton swabs only once or cleanse droppers in alcohol between applications if any contact with the toe or nail happens.

Tea Tree Oil

Using a cotton swab or dropper, apply undiluted tea tree oil to the entire area of infection. Apply 2 to 3 times daily. Make special care to drip some under the nail itself. According to the National Institutes of Health, Tea tree oil has been effective in killing bacteria and fungus . It is widely available at the pharmacy department of drug stores and mega retailers.

Mentholated Vapor Rub

Rub a name brand Mentholated Vapor Rub product over the toe. Apply the product at least 2 to 3 times each day. The camphor within the rub has anti fungal properties to fight the infection.

Use either remedy 2-3 times a day for eight to twelve weeks. Improvement should start to be seen after four to six weeks. For particularly tough cases, continue using the remedy for an extended period of time until the nail grows out.
