The Jack-O-Lantern

This happened to my sister back in 1990 when she was about fifteen years old. The eerie incident occurred shortly after Halloween to be exact.

I stepped out one night and went to band practice with my parents. My sister returned home and went in the semi-dark house while keeping all the lights turned off as not to attract unwanted attention. She sauntered from her bedroom to the living room, when she noticed that the Jack-o-Lantern turned as if by its own means and faced her. It scared the daylights out of her because as she claimed hysterically to my dad over the phone, “There was nobody there.”

Needless to say, she forgot about her things and ran from the house, got in her friend’s car and drove. She was stopped by the sheriff, who took her to the station for driving without a license.

The sheriff contacted my parents and before we knew it, we were home again. The house had a really eerie vibe and the Jack-o-Lantern was still on the cedar chest where it was originally placed, but it was the heavy negativity that hung thick on this particular night that was unavoidable.

We explored the house searching through the closets, under the beds, and behind the doors. No prowlers to be found, no nothing. My dad removed the Jack-o-Lantern from the house, started the car and ran over the pumpkin several times, then disposed of it in the trash can. He returned and told us that Halloween was officially canceled and he didn’t want to see any pumpkins in the house again. To my recollection that was the last creepy incident to occur in this particular house we lived in. Since there is nothing about this particular house, we have no idea if a tragedy ever occurred here, either, or if anything evil happened in the house’s past. One thing we did learn from our brief time living that house that it was a eyesore for the next door neighbor, who kept asking me,

“Hey kid, when are you going to move out? I want that house torn down and take the lot.”

It led me to believe that something very bad took place in that house because there was negativity and unrest in that house all of the time, too.
