There are literally thousands of substitute teachers in Nevada, with over 4000 just in Clark County alone. With more teachers getting laid off every year, there are no shortages of substitute teaching jobs in Nevada. If you are interested to be considered among this high-demand field, there are certain substitute teaching requirements you need to have.
For a substitute teaching license, the Nevada Department of Education requires that all applicants submit official proof of 60 college credit hours. Unlike many states, you do not have to have a bachelor’s degree to substitute teach. This is only necessary for the rare assignments that run longer than 90 days. Six of the college credits must be from approved education-based courses. For example, Introduction to Secondary Education, Introduction to Elementary Education, Educational Psychology, and Nevada School Law would all qualify.
Prospective substitute teachers must be able to pass a fingerprint background check. If you have ever been charged with anything, be upfront and honest with your interviewer. It does not mean you will not get the job. They consider criminal backgrounds on a case-by-case basis. Substitute teaching candidates must also be free of Tuberculosis and provide proof from a doctor.
A substitute teaching license will only be good for three years. During that time, you will be expected to pass the following courses: U.S. Constitution, Nevada School Law, and Nevada Constitution. You must also have another fingerprint check and the Praxis I testing completed.
School districts in Nevada will have some additional requirements. For example, Clark County asks for three work-related references and a 10-hour substitute teaching training before you can start working in the district. They also require that you work at least twice a month to stay active in the system.
