Script Kiddies Hack @NBCNews Claiming Ground Zero was Attacked

Tweets started rolling across NBCNews Twitter account stating ground zero had been attacked. At first it seemed real enough with the information until the fourth tweet came through.

The first tweet from NBCNews twitter account:

“Breaking News! Ground Zero has just been attacked. Flight 5736 has crashed into the site, suspected hijacking. more as the story develops.” That one came across at 4:46 CST.

One of my own followers had tweeted it. Then I decided to check the local news stations and nothing on any of them about it. Still feeling foolish for falling for this, I checked their feed on Twitter and the two following ones popped up:

“This is not a joke, Ground Zero has just been attacked. We’re attempting to get reporters on the scene. #groundzeroattacked” and “Flight 4782 is not responding, suspected hijacking. One plane just hit Ground Zero site at 5:47. #groundzeroattacked”

A few minutes after the three initial tweets came through, the following tweet popped up on my twitter feed:

“NBCNEWS hacked by The Script Kiddies. Follow them at @s_kiddies!”

I am now angry because stupidity like this from a group of hackers isn’t funny considering the emotions that are running high on the weekend of the original terror attacks.

Since then, no new tweets have came from the NBCnews feed. One thing that made me think it could have been legit, other than the source itself, was the talk yesterday of a possible terror threat that had been on twitter just the day before. However, the possible threat itself was not confirmed.

Just moments after the hacking of NBCNews feed “Ground Zero” came up on trending topics. This has been a destructive waste of time for someone to hack that account and has been confirmed by NBC Digital Exec: “Ignore tweets from @nbcnews till further notice. We’ve been hacked. Do not retweet.”
