Scaring Up Laughs With the Horror Comedy

Although Halloween movies are usually known for being designed to frighten their audiences, some spooky films can also be full of a great deal of humor. If you are one of those who likes Halloween but doesn’t enjoy being scared by a movie — or even if you just like comedies — then be sure to watch any of the following Halloween comedy films.

“Beetlejuice”

When it comes to movies, a good rule of thumb is that if it’s made by Tim Burton, it is bound to be a delightful mix of comedy, strangeness, and something indescribable. This film is no exception, and it has since gone down in the film history books as one of Burton’s finer moments due to its clever combination of excellent casting, wicked sense of humor, and that indefinable Burton touch. Although it might be a little disturbing for younger viewers, most will find it a refreshing change from the blood-soaked films that comprise much Halloween fare.

“The Addams Family”

If anything makes this movie, it has to be the casting. After all, how can you go wrong when you have the likes of Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, and Christopher Lloyd playing the classic macabre family? Of course, the film does sometimes verge on the absurd, but that is precisely what makes it such a pleasure to watch. While it does take some liberties and changes some of the flavor of the well-known television series, the movie manages to capture that mixture of lovability and just plain strangeness that has made the Addams family a household name.

“Tremors”

Finally, we come to this film which, although the monsters can be a little scary, nevertheless has a great deal of comedy laced into it. When a race of giant underground worms threatens a small Western town, it is up to the locals (including Kevin Bacon) to attempt to survive and eventually defeat the creatures.

The presence of the great Reba McEntire, while adding a little class to this film, ultimately cannot make it any more serious. In the end, though, it is worth a watch, if only for the clever mixture of comedy and horror.

If you’re in the mood for a laugh this Halloween rather than the usual fright fest, then you should consider one of the many horror comedies that still manage to make themselves known in the movie world. While they may not be suitable for all viewers, most should enjoy them.
