Review: Joseph Campione Pepperoni Pizza Texas Toast

I decided to make spaghetti for dinner last night and had to stop off at the grocery store on my way home for some of the ingredients. I originally planned on making a salad to go with it (to use up some of the garden vegetables in my crisper drawer). But, while I was at the store, I decided I wanted some sort of garlic bread instead.

While in that section of the store, I discovered something I hadn’t tried before, Joseph Campione Pepperoni Pizza Texas Toast. While it wasn’t exactly garlic bread, it did look somewhat interesting and I figured it would give us something different to go with the spaghetti and picked up a box of it.

I should have stuck with my salad idea.

I’ve had other Joseph Campione products in the past and haven’t had too many complaints about their garlic bread. However, when it came to this particular product, there was a lot to be desired.

One of the first things I noticed about this bread is it was very soggy. I baked this in my toaster oven and had it in there longer than it was supposed to be cooked. But, despite the fact the bread was a darker shade of brown than I usually prefer, it wasn’t even close to being crisp. I’m not sure if that was because of grease from the pepperoni and cheese or some other reason.

The thing that really surprised me about this product though was the lack of taste. My first thought when I saw it had pepperoni was the bread would be a bit on the spicy side. In fact, I was half expecting it to be too spicy and made sure I had some Tums handy, just in case.

However, it was the exact opposite. The bread really didn’t have much flavor to it at all, spicy or otherwise. In fact, it was even tasteless when compared to regular garlic bread (which, of course, at least has some sort of garlic flavor to it). As a result of this, I ended up having to soak it in spaghetti sauce just to give it some sort of taste.

Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed by this purchase. Fortunately, I didn’t spend any more on this than I would have spent had I bought regular garlic bread. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t feel like I didn’t waste my money on it. If you see this at the store, I recommend looking for something else.
