Pros and Cons of Licorice Root

Many herbs have great benefits for most people. However, even though they are “all natural,” they aren’t always safe for everyone. Licorice root is a powerful example of this.

Pros:

Sore Throats: The best example I’ve seen on the ability of licorice root to ease a sore throat was from our daughter’s horse. The mare had colic, and the vet had to put a tube down her throat. (Horses can’t burp or throw up.) The tube irritated her throat and it made her less interested in food.

After checking with the vet, we ground up some of the root and added it to her feed. I think she knew that it would help; she actually licked up the root first, then ate the grain.

Upset stomachs: The same coating effect that soothes the throat can help ease an upset stomach. This can ease the pain of acid indigestion and calm a “nervous stomach.”

Sweetener: Many herbs have a less than savory smell and taste, but they provide benefits other herbs may not. Sometimes, an herbalist will add another, stronger (and tastier) herb to mask the smell and taste. The sweet taste of licorice root is one that may be chosen, in very small amounts.

Cons

Blocking Medications: A small amount mixed with another herb may not be blocked. If you use it as the primary remedy, it can’t be taken with anything else. The coating effect will also block the absorption of things taken with it. This is very important if you are taking a prescription.

Diabetics: Licorice contains enough sugar to really mess with blood sugar levels. There is a product, called DGL, that may be a safer alternative. It still offers the coating aspect but the sugar has largely been removed.

High Blood Pressure: This, along with diabetes, is one of the biggest “cons” in the use of this root. It can raise pressure levels, especially if they haven’t already been controlled.

It’s important to remember that being all natural doesn’t mean it’s safe for everyone. If you wish to use this herb or any other supplement, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor, pharmacist and a qualified herbal practitioner. This will help you avoid dangerous side effects and drug/herb interactions. This is even more important if you have any medical conditions or if you take prescription medications.
