PC Versus Console First-Person Shooters

Although both consoles as well as PCs have a variety of first-person shooters, anyone who has played on a decent computer can attest to the superiority of PC gaming. It’s easier to move around, shoot, and get used to how the game works. Even the few disadvantages that PCs have are disappearing quickly.

The variety of shooters on consoles is undeniably greater than on PCs as of now. Titles such as Halo are only for consoles, and the multiplayer community for games like Call of Duty is much larger than on the PC. Recently, though, even that is changing. PC gaming has sat in the background for years, but the number of titles is increasing every year. With more powerful processors and improved graphics, the computer is able to match and even surpass the quality expected on the consoles.

PCs have numerous advantages over consoles when it comes to FPSs. Changing the controls around on the keyboard and mouse makes it easier to get a feel for the game. Instead of having to remember what the “action” button is for every game, a player can just set it to E in every game on the PC. Meanwhile, console gamers are forced to memorize the control layouts for each game, as most lack the option to set controls.

For some reason, console shooters are still lacking in terms of sensitivity modifications. While consoles can adjust sensitivities in increments of 1, PCs can do the same in increments of .01. While it may not seem like a huge difference, using a mouse rather than a controller allows for much more precise aiming.

In addition, other aspects of the game can be touched up as well. For example, the popular Valve games Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike feature easy-to-modify configuration files that allow for scripts and binds that make it easier to play the game, but nothing that will make it unfair. It is also simple to design mods that will change the entire game, but all done with the developer’s permission.

Movement and aim, of course, is what really sets PCs apart from consoles. Actions such as rocket jumping are noticeably absent on consoles. Turning a mouse as opposed to a joystick makes gameplay much smoother. Rocket “airshots” are almost impossible to perform of consoles because it requires precise aiming that controllers are not capable of. Players such as fatal1ty can pull off crazy shots because of how PC gaming is designed. Try doing that on a console.
