How to Make a Braided Scarf/Necklace

Style and warmth in cold winters often do not go hand in hand. Bundling up and accessorizing are not typically activities that complement each other. With this simple project, though, your finished creation doubles as both a heat-trapping scarf and a fashionable necklace.

Purchase several complementary colors of yarn or several skeins of a single color. You’ll need 150 pieces total, each measuring 13 feet in length.

Create three groups of 50 pieces of yarn. Align the ends of the pieces and wrap all 50 pieces of each group with a hair tie positioned near the end of the strands. Once all three groups are tied, you can braid as though each group is a single strand.

Group together the tied ends of each group. Use another hair tie to fasten all three groups of yarn together. Hang the bundles by their adjoining hair tie to a clothes hanger, then affix the hanger somewhere high off the ground such as a ceiling hook.

Spread out the three yarn bundles from one another so they do not tangle, and braid the three bundled yarn groups together as though working with three individual strands. Braid until you reach the end of the 13-foot strands.

Wrap the end of your long, thick braid with an additional hair tie. Bring the starting and ending points of the braid together and tie in a double knot. Trim the ends to several inches and flatten them against the rest of the braid.

Cut a final piece of yarn measuring approximately 1 foot long and wrap it around the knot. Make sure to cover the loose ends as you wrap.
