How a MBA Degree Created Value in My Life

I earned a MBA degree in Marketing and Supply Chain Management in 2009 from Florida State University. Before I returned to school, I worked in the business world as a marketer, both in the fields of market research and consumer goods marketing.

Why I Chose To Earn a MBA Degree?

I pursued my MBA degree because I thought that it would improve my ability and opportunity to become a marketing executive. In my career experiences, I had learned so much about marketing, I thought I would be able to bring those skills and experiences to business school to learn more about being a better businessman.

Though you can be successful in business without earning a MBA degree, I would say that it does open doors into working on more complex and sophisticated products and services.

What Have I Done Since I Earned a MBA Degree?

Since I earned my MBA degree, I have been able to start my own business and gained personal confidence to do many things I never considered doing beforehand.

Before earning my MBA, I would have never been able to start my own business. I partnered with a couple of friends to start an interactive marketing agency. There are so many things that are difficult to learn without guidance. Learning in the “school of hard knocks” is such a tough way to learn about business. There are so many tactical things that a businessperson must do to succeed, however, without considering the strategic issues and concerns, your business will have a much harder time in succeeding in the marketplace long-term.

Another hobby I took up was writing. Writing so much in business school allowed me the opportunity to discover that I really enjoyed writing as a hobby and as a mean of communicating to others. The internet allows people to communicate ideas so quickly nowadays versus just a couple of decades ago.

Learning About Your Most Important Subject, Yourself

The most important subject I was able to learn about was myself. It was such an important time in my life. I made lifelong friends, some are as close to me today as siblings. Also, I had to get used to meeting new people in a new town where I knew no one. The realization dawned on me that I had the work ethic that I always questioned and that others such as my family questioned. Even though I was a successful and well-adjusted person, I now have so much confidence in myself and my abilities.

It was the greatest learning experience, both about business and about myself.
