Halloween: Do We Really Need to Ruin the Fun?

On my way to work this morning I heard on the radio that we need to celebrate Jesus Ween instead of Halloween. I laughed. It was the most bizarre thing I had heard on the radio in a while, and there are a lot of bizarre things on the radio these days. I want to make clear that I am not saying this is a horrible idea, I am a Christian and I think that having Christian celebrations is a good thing, but I do think the name of this celebration is a bit ridiculous. Is it really necessary to replace Halloween completely?

A couple of years ago, my son wanted to be The Cat in the Hat for Halloween. He was 2 years old and it was probably the most adorable thing I had ever seen. I drew little whiskers on his face and a black cat nose, and he was so excited. My husband and I dressed up as Thing One and Thing Two, and my son got a kick out of the fact that we matched one of his favorite books. Basically it was a great family day and we all had a blast.

I think as long as you don’t actually use the day as a day to do terrible things, it’s perfectly harmless to your soul. You dress up in a costume, and even if it’s a witch or a goblin costume, it’s exactly that: a costume. Something that you probably don’t believe in, but you put it on for fun and get some free candy. And who doesn’t like free candy?!
